How to get to Fontainebleau from Paris
The amazing and picturesque city of Fontainebleau is located 60 km southeast of Paris. Fontainebleau is the largest commune of Ile de France with an area of 172 km² after Paris.
The main attraction of the city of Fontainebleau is the magnificent palace, which was once the residence of many rulers of France, such as Louis VII and Napoleon III. Fontainebleau Castle was first mentioned in the 12th century. Thousands of tourists come from all over the world to personally see this beautiful architectural masterpiece, made in the style of Italian mannerism. The palace was built by Francis I in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. Since 1981, the Fontainebleau palace and park have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in France.
The interiors of the Fontainebleau Palace amaze the imagination with an abundance of luxury and a majestic atmosphere. The building houses the Museum of Napoleon I, which stores memorabilia related to Napoleon and his family from the era of the Empire (1804 –1814). Here you can also see portraits and personal belongings of Napoleon’s second wife Maria-Louise, his son, the King of Rome, his mother, brothers and sisters.
Be sure to visit the Chinese Museum of Empress Eugenia and the living rooms created in 1863 for the wife of Napoleon III. They were used for private receptions, as well as leisure rooms. The Chinese Museum houses the Empress’s collected masterpieces of oriental art from the Far East, China and Siam.
Fontainebleau Castle can be visited at any time of the year. Admission is 11 €, and admission is free on the first Sunday of every month.
